IMPORTANCE OF DATABASE SYSTEMS,
DATA WAREHOUSES AND DATA MARTS
If a company wants to know the importance of database
system, it has to learn the definitions of some concepts. The first one is database; it is a collection
of all data in an information system but that data is stored with a specific
organization called data hierarchy. ¿Where store we data? We store data in a
database management system that you can use to create, maintain and access to
all your information of your company.
There are two types of data, internal like transaction
and external like economic indicators. Also there are two ways to see data in
database, first the physical view, it means the way company stores the
information and second the logical view where users can see how information
appears.
The database management system has some components in
it; they are database engine, where the data is stored, manipulated and
retrieved. The next one is data definition, which creates and maintain data
dictionary. The third one is data manipulation, which adds, deletes, modifies
and retrieves records. The fourth one is application generation, which designs
of an application and the last one is data administration, which backups,
recoveries securities and changes management.
Another concept is data warehouses which are a
collection of data, but they are referenced to making decision. A data has some
characteristics in a data warehouse, for example, data is focused in a specific
area, also is based in time and is use for analytic purposes.
The last concept is data marts that is use only in one
department of a company, for specific users but has some advantages over data
warehouses because it´s faster, the response time is improved, it´s easy to use
and it´s cheaper.
When a company knows the principal concepts of an
information system, can use it to have a better organization system. The
company will know what would happen in a near or far future, how the sales will
be, how the contact is with the costumers and all about personal of the company. It is so important to have cleared all concepts of
databases because the importance of it is to improve the quality of many
companies in the business world. If you enter to a company you will see all of
the programs that the organization uses to organize the information.
In conclusion, the technologies systems are so
important now in business world because they facilitate the management of a
company in several ways like financial and economical issues.
